Indeed, The Great Gatsby is less involved with human emotion than any book of comparable fame I can think of. None of its characters are likable. None of them are even dis likable, though nearly all of them are despicable. They function here only as types, walking through the pages of the book like kids in a school play who wear sashes telling the audience what they represent: OLD MONEY, THE AMERICAN DREAM, ORGANIZED CRIME. It is possible, of course, to deny your readers access to the inner lives of your characters and still write a psychologically potent book: I give you Blood Meridian. But to do that, you yourself must understand your characters and conceive of them as human.

He only glancingly compares himeself Jay Gatsby. That's interesting, not only because the association's so easy to make , but because most of the other tracks on the Gatsby soundtrack do present themselves as ruminations on the book and its impact. American Lit. teachers everywhere are probably silently thanking Lurhmann for providing them with yet another useful classroom tool here's hoping they don't overlook this album, which unfolds like the term papers of a particularly gifted Fitzgerald seminar.

But that's not Lurhmann's way. He is cinema's boldest remixer, infusing familiar works with new rhythms that refresh their relevance (or, in the view of Baz haters , overwhelm and distort them). His version of Romeo and Juliet rethought rebellious love for the moment when grunge collided with rave in Moulin Rouge! , he brought Verdi's La Traviata into the era of the Now That's What I Call Music! compilations. His style of twisting texts into the present may seem facile at first, but they're extremely effective. Kids come for the hits and stay for the stories. Writing a narrative essay is basically writing a story connected with personal experiences. The key element of a narrative essay is a defined point of view presented in the paper and delivered through sharing emotions and sensory details with the reader. As a narrative essay is always a reflection of a personal experience of the author and that is the reason it often has the form of a story and also often becomes a personal narrative essay.

Fitzgerald became a second lieutenant, and was stationed at Camp Sheridan, in Montgomery, Alabama. There he met and fell in love with a wild seventeen-year-old beauty named Zelda Sayre. Zelda finally agreed to marry him, but her overpowering desire for wealth, fun, and leisure led her to delay their wedding until he could prove a success. With the publication of This Side of Paradise in 6975, Fitzgerald became a literary sensation, earning enough money and fame to convince Zelda to marry him.

I know how I&rsquo m supposed to feel about Gatsby : In the words of the critic Jonathan Yardley, &ldquo that it is the American masterwork.&rdquo Malcolm Cowley admired its &ldquo moral permanence.&rdquo T. S. Eliot called it &ldquo the first step that American fiction has taken since Henry James.&rdquo Lionel Trilling thought Fitzgerald had achieved in it &ldquo the ideal voice of the novelist.&rdquo That&rsquo s the received Gatsby : a linguistically elegant, intellectually bold, morally acute parable of our nation.

Like Nick in The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald found this new lifestyle seductive and exciting, and, like Gatsby, he had always idolized the very rich. Now he found himself in an era in which unrestrained materialism set the tone of society, particularly in the large cities of the East. Even so, like Nick, Fitzgerald saw through the glitter of the Jazz Age to the moral emptiness and hypocrisy beneath, and part of him longed for this absent moral center. In many ways, The Great Gatsby represents Fitzgerald&rsquo s attempt to confront his conflicting feelings about the Jazz Age. Like Gatsby, Fitzgerald was driven by his love for a woman who symbolized everything he wanted, even as she led him toward everything he despised.

I will grant Fitzgerald this much: Somehow, in the five years between his literary debut and The Great Gatsby, he taught himself to write. This Side of Paradise is intermittently brilliant but terrifically uncontrolled. Gatsby, by contrast, is focused and deliberate: a single crystal, scrupulously polished.
